The Devils Through The Ages

Although when it comes to web design, your work truly never done, however you can say it has been launched; and as of midnight last night the Plaid Tongued Devils new website was thrown out for the world to see.

This will be the Devil’s 20th year anniversary as a thriving Calgary band. The new site is just one step in the larger plan to make this a big year for the Devils.

With years of content, great stories, tour and gig pictures, songs, swag, videos, and lyrics; it wasn’t hard to pull a cool looking site together. What was hard was making sure to get it all in there.

As I was wrapping up I began to think of all the sites which had come before over the 20 years of Devils online pimping.

Thanks you our friends at the Way Back Machine I was able to dig up the dirt on this evolving creature of thedevils.com

Lets dig up some old graves

iWeb is the Devil / JUNE 02, 2008

This site is nice, however it brings up images of toddlers at the dinner table not letting their chicken touch their pees. We have to give some credit as this is one of the better sites I’ve seen built in “iWeb”. Fun fonts, a great hero picture, all the elements of a great website limited by a substandard design program.

Favorite Feature
Those little play buttons to the side of the song list would lead you to believe that clicking the play icon would allow you to “dig some tunes” however clicking the icon sends you to a empty white page with nothing but you and the song file. With a 25% fail rate on songs playing, it borders on psychological warfare.

Clarity over Cool Graphics / APRIL 02, 2006

The main graphic on this page is off the cover of the Monstroma album which had been recently released, it is a beautiful graphic, I’d love to have on a t-shirt. The only downside with using your key retail space on your main page to display a large abstract image and surrounding it with very little explanatory text, is that we have no clear idea what this site is for. Is it a pet cemetery for alcoholic, musicians? the next Neil Gaman movie? an Armageddon party?

Favorite Feature
If by chance you have found the main page a tad confusing and clicked though to another page to get a better idea of what the site is about, you are welcomed by and entirely new layout, color scheme and logo. Now that your having an aneurysm, deciphering websites are the least of your concern.

PDT The animated series / JUNE 10, 2004

I love the cartoon band here on the main page very “Prozac Hot Show”. Again we have that small problem of figuring out what this site is for. It’s looking more band like than the previous site however I’m more likely to want to bookmark this thinking it’s a cool web-comic and wait for update that will never come. The internet can be so cruel.

Favorite Feature
The site is also kind of a content tease. You navigate to a new page from this sexy, albeit slightly mysterious landing page which promises more interesting things to come, however what we get is shapeless blobby pages floated every which way with no navigational bar to rescue you. It draws you in and hits you with lines and lines of center justified text. Giving your browser blue balls.

Sponsored by Clip Art / Apr 14, 2002

That car is amazing and the yellow background really makes it pop. Other than that I’m afraid this page is clip art over load. In fitting with the PTD website tradition they have designed yet another logo for the band that will unlikely survive past this site of even this one page.

Favorite Feature
From the main page there are adorable clip art buttons that let you know where to go next to find what you want. Of course as soon as you click one you are send to a confusion text heavy page and realize quickly that your happy little navigational friends have abandoned you, leaving you to fend for yourself in a new world were the scary pitch fork back button is king.

The Devils is in the Details / Apr 28, 1999

This is the kind of site the mafia would use to hide their money laundering because no one with ever want to read it. Neon yellow font in 8pt on a black background. The group picture is cute but the new logo look like your stole it from an east indian restaurant.

Favorite Feature
I think everyone’s hair cuts in that picture.

The Very First Site / Oct 09, 1997

Interesting Fact
This site was not build, no. It was embroidered onto picnic blankets from bed, bath and beyond.
The band needed a bonding activity and a website and being a clever bunch they came up with a wonderful idea to kill two birds with one stone. After the birds were dead, each member took a plaid or checkered sheet and used what ever thread was lying around, preferably ones that would be hard to read or colors that clashed as dramatically as possible.

Together they sewed a few pages for the site, scanned them in and put it up where people would see it.

To this day each original member still sleeps with a sheet from the original site.
