Fire Bug 18 | Building a Great Act with Zan Moore

Host Carisa Hendrix & Special Guest Zan Moore | Building a Great Act
Show Notes:
Zan Moore is an amazing entertainer who has booking tours down to an art. Over the summer he performed 60 show and traveled 1500 miles over 4 months and has achieved that insane feat two years in a row. Zan is also half of the world’s best partner poi pair (and that’s not just my opinion).
On this week’s show we talk about getting into entertainment, how Zan and Aurora developed their partner poi skills and his new endeavors helping organize Fire Drums, Pacific Fire Gathering and Kinetic Fire. Zan’s advice about starting to work on your skills as an entertainer using street and festival shows as well as how we can experiment with style and character while developing an act, is invaluable for anyone seriously considering an career as an entertainer.

Always innovating, Buugeng goes Acrylic
While doing research for the buugeng article on the Firepedia site, I came across this video in the Buugeng.org forums. In the video what you are seeing are little with S sticks that BouncingBoy81 calls “moogeng”.
It just amazes me that this style of prop is so young and still we are constantly coming u with new takes on it. I am so grateful to be a manipulator in the age of youtube.

Fire Eating Book Review
FIRE EATING BOOK REVIEWS
The Professional’s Guide to Fire Eating
by Brian Brushwood
ISBN”# 0971364605
As far as fire eating books go, this is the best of the bunch. Brian’s book is comprehensive and extensive, going into detail about every conceivable aspect to the art.
I give it a perfect score

BEST PART
The illustrations and the touch flourishes are a big pat of what set this book apart. The illustrations are clear and straightforward, perfect for beginners. The torch flourishes add polish to an already great show, making the book also useful to professionals.

Fire Eating – A Manual of Instruction
by Ben Mack
ISBN”# 0917643127
This book is clear but a little incomplete. Great illustrations and point form instructions make it feel a bit like one of Ikea’s assembly manuals.
I give it 3.5 out of 5

BEST PART
The author spends the entire first section of the book telling you all the reasons not to eat fire, it’s the topic on which he is the most extensive. The writing is also very good, it was a fun read.

Fire Magic – Fire Eating Plus Many Fire Tricks
by Clettis V. Musson
You will likely find it difficult to learn fire eating from this book and I don’t recommend it. However if you are already a seasoned fire bug and are looking for a few new stills to put under your belt this Fire Magic is an interesting read.
I give it 3.5 out of 5

BEST PART
The range of tricks covered and the writing style made this a fun and easy read.

First Post of 2011: Hello from the Caribbean
As some of you may know, I’ve taken some time off over Christmas and New Years to re-evaluate and re-locate. We return to our regular podcasting schedule next Wednesday with an interview from Shireen Press from Flameboyant and a whole new set of new years resolutions for Prop Manipulators.
Right now I wanted to take the time to catch all you wonderful people up on what to expect from the new year.
Near the end of 2010 I accepted a council position with the North American Fire Arts Association, this got me thinking a lot about what I had to offer them and what our community of fire bugs and prop junkies really needed.
Relocating to a beach house in the Caribbean for 3 months was exiting, but I became consumed with figuring out how to make the Fire Bug Blog more targeted to what we need as a community. Here’s what I discovered. I wasn’t gonna happen, the blog and podcasts are a great start but we need so much more. We need reliable and accurate information from experts we can trust, we need a place to explore and share information and inspiration in order to challenge each other to push our art form to the next level and then beyond that.
I have taken much of my savings and invested in this project, I am working tirelessly to give this new resource the functionality that we are missing elsewhere, with out stepping on anyone’s toes. This new resource will be reliable and non-bias. I don’t plan to use it to sell anything as I do not want to take away from anyone’s business. All are welcome to be involved.
If you have a few moments please fill out this short survey that will help me build a better resource.
If you are interested in being more involved please email me at info@carisahendrix.com
Fire Shoot!! Kiss of fire

I just love shooting with JT, check out his blog by clicking here. There he writes,
This was an interesting space but we made the mistake of shooting in it too long. We both felt sick afterwards from the combination of mouldy dust and humidity (the insides of my nose were black from the dust…) I don’t think it’d stop me from shooting there again but masks and shorter shoots are a must I think.
And I totally agree, I was sick for a day but this shot alone proves that it was worth it.
Stay tuned for more shots from this series, I know wont stop bugging our Mr JT till I have the set.
Comments welcome.
New Book By Timothy Ferriss, “The 4-Hour Body”
The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman
Ferriss’ last book The 4-Hour Workweek is a huge part of the reason why I produced my DVD “How To Eat Fire”, sold most of what I owned and started on a quest to see as much of the world as possible.
As amazing as his last book was I am as excited about this one. The ides behind the “4 Hour Body” is to bring his signature efficiency and effectiveness to maters of health, fitness and sex.
It comes out today, but I pre-ordered my copy 3 weeks ago.
The Fire Community, What Do We Need?
Fire fanatics are hosting events, festivals conferences. There is an amazing vocabulary of online videos and tutorials to inspire and teach us. We have NAFAA to bind us to a common set of safety standards.
What we as fire performers have built is amazing, we deserve congratulations. Here is the one thing though. When I talk to or meet other fire bugs, the kind of connection and mutual respect I experience is like nothing I can describe.
Here’s my question, what does our community need to make it easier to make those deep connections with each other. What do we need to make Fire Arts that much easier to obsess over and master.
Tell me your thoughts.
